Halifax Convention Centre Opening Delayed

DSC_4535

The opening date of the Halifax Convention Centre has been pushed from January 2016 until September 2016. Public consultation and weather have been the main factors that are putting the development off schedule. As a result, 17 events will be impacted by the delayed opening date and will have to find a new venue. The official grand opening is now scheduled for January 2017.

Inside the Dillon: Pre-construction Update.

dillon outside (2)

I was fortunate enough to get access to the Dillon on Market and Sackville Streets to take some pictures before construction begins. The developer, Mosaik Properties, has named the redeveloped building after Patrick Dillon, who had constructed the original building in the 1860s. He ran a store on the street level while living with his family on the upper levels. Mosaik Properties is keeping the original building completely intact and will only need to replace the columns within the historic structure so it can properly support the the new floors being built above.

Here are some pictures I photographed of the inside of the original building before construction begins in a few weeks. The units constructed in the historical portion of the building will have exposed brick and beams, as shown in the in the pictures. The photograph included of the basement is where Strange Adventures was formerly located. Construction is planned to be complete by fall 2015. More info @ www.thedillon.ca

Southport condo development receives final approval

southport1

The Southport condo development by Urban Capital at 1065 Barrington St. has received final approval and construction can begin as soon as next month. There was a public hearing last night but no one showed up to speak in favour of or against the development. The decision to approve the project was unanimous and can not be appealed.

The developer is holding a breaking ground ceremony this Thursday @ 6pm for anyone who is interested. This will be the first project in Halifax from Urban Capital .

Introducing…The Dillon (Market St./ Sackville St.)

Dillon-building

Introducing….The Dillon! This 8 storey mixed-use development is located on the corner of Market St. and Sackville St. in downtown Halifax. The building will consist of one and two bedroom condo units. Commercial space will be available on the ground level. The developer is Mosaik Properties and they have many residential buildings throughout Halifax.

The building will have many amenities including a rooftop gym, private balconies, stainless steel appliances, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a terraced green space, to name a few. The rooftop terrace definitely stands out a unique feature that is not often seen in Halifax.

Another great aspect of this project is that the developer is keeping the historic building and incorporating it into the development. The building was originally constructed in 1860’s by the Dillon family of Halifax. Loft units that will be incorporated into the historic portion of the building will include beautiful exposed brick walls and wooden beams.

TD Tower Redevelopment Update

Work is nearing completion on the TD Tower redevelopment on Barrington Street. The old mechanical equipment that was on the roof was removed a while back and now is being replaced by three floors to match the height of the expanded tower. Progress had slowed quite a bit while removing the original mechanical floors but since they got the first floor rebuilt, pace has picked back up. I would be surprised if this crane is still up at the end of 2014.
